Portait of a Sport – John O’Brien

2 Feb

When I was putting the initial list together of people to include in this project, John O’Brien was one of the first that was put on the list. His story is well known to most US soccer fans, yet who he is has often times been a mystery to those same people who supported his career. In many ways he has been an enigma for soccer fans in the US. Equal parts talent on the field have often times been met with equal amounts of mystery about John away from the game.

John and I go back quite away. We played on the same youth team for a few years. We both played in Holland at the same time (his career much more lengthy and successful than my own…) and even played a bit on the US Olympic team (along with Dunny). Of all the teammates I ever had, John was hands down the most talented. Even as a kid, pre Ajax days, he always played and saw the game slightly differently than everyone else. His experience at Ajax, especially at such a young and crucial age to his development only heightened the talents and understanding of the game that he already possessed.
